Soak Up Every Moment

Newport, Rhode Island

August, 2008

For David Newbower and Elly Chou their love story sounds much like that of a fairytale. A mutual friend wanted to set them up, but Dave figured that they "would meet at some point in the near future." Then fate stepped in and told him "that it was now or never."

When he first emailed Elly she was pursuing a modeling contract in Singapore and he was working in Boston. They started exchanging conversations about Elly's exotic traveling adventures until, that is, she returned to her native San Francisco. "I was in love when I saw her for the very first time in the Oakland Airport," recalls Dave. So after a year and a half of doing the "every other weekend" bit, Elly decided to move to Boston to be with Dave.

The day they got engaged "it was a perfect August day and I had never been happier in my life," smiles Elly. Although for Dave, the trip proved to be a bit more stressful with looming thoughts of a "dream the night before that the swan boat" nearly tipped over. "I proposed very carefully," he recalls. Adding: "I was holding onto the ring as tight as possible with two hands." Elly, of course, said yes.

Afterward they shared a picnic of cupcakes and sparkling cider at the Boston Public Gardens, watched Stardust at the Boston Museum of Science and then had a romantic dinner of French cuisine at Aujourd'hui in the Four Seasons. "It was bliss," notes Elly.

In June they chose to have a private ceremony in Vienna in honor of Dave's grandparents who were “forced to make a harrowing escape during World War II.” When Dave and Elly shared the news of their plans, he remembers his grandmother's face lighting up and her saying: "it would be the completion of a circle."

Two months later, they exchanged vows publicly in one of Newport, R.I.'s historic mansions along the coast. When Elly walked down the aisle toward Dave in her strapless, flowing gown, "I don't recall any thoughts in words, only an immense feeling of lightness and pure joy," she said. Dave remembers trying really hard to "soak up every moment with Elly, eat every item on the menu, and drink every chocolate malt frappe they would serve; to make sure I wouldn't regret that it was over too soon."

When it was over, Elly and Dave both remember the day as being a "dream come true." One of the most important things to them was "for the mood to be welcoming and lively," states Elly. "We hoped for people to have one of the best weekends of their lives," adds Dave. "Periodically getting pictures and hearing little stories about the weekend," from friends and family certainly proves that it was a success beyond their wildest dreams.

Since they had already traveled so much that year, they opted for a one-week honeymoon in one of the happiest places on earth: Disneyworld. Three trips to the Magic Kingdom, two trips to Epcot, two and a half rounds of golf, and one afternoon at Typhoon Lagoon was the perfect icing on their enchanting journey. Elly quips, we have "a deeper, once-in-a-lifetime bond."
